Welcome!¡Bienvenidos!
¡Bienvenido! My name is Megan Ford and I have a passion for teaching and loving kids. This is my ePortfolio, where you can follow the process I have made as a Spanish Language and Culture major here at Cal State University of Monterey Bay.
Statement of Purpose
I chose Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures as my major because I wanted to be able to communicate with my family. I started my college education as a biology major, which I quickly realized wasn’t for me. As I talked to my advisor my uncertainty about my major was contrasted with my certainty of wanting to work with children in public education. Together, we decided Spanish as a major was a much better fit. Not only will I earn a Bachelors degree, but I will learn the ability to communicate fluently with my family, and others alike.
At CSUMB, I’ve learned so much about the struggles that immigrants face to improve their lives. Throughout the many readings of Span 301S, I’ve gained a much larger understanding of the dangers of crossing the border, the struggle to make a home somewhere new, and the sadness of leaving behind a home and family, that are loved. As a transfer student, I have also learned much from my junior college, Cuesta College. There I really learned how to speak the language, specifically in Professor Langer’s classes, despite all of the previous classes I had taken.
Once I’ve completed my Bachelors degree in Spanish, I will earn a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and a Masters degree in either Spanish or Psychology. With these educational experiences I hope to teach at Georgia Brown, the local Bilingual Elementary School in my hometown. As a teacher I want to help children find confidence in themselves, since I lacked confidence in myself and my 6th grade math teacher was the one who helped me find it. I believe that education, should be fun and not a chore. That children should be able to be as creative as possible and should be allowed to run and play daily. I hope to redefine the education system and include more valuable life lessons to help small children grow into good adults.
