MLO 1 Language Proficiency
MLO 1 Language Proficiency:
Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines
The outcomes of this MLO were supported by the following course, Span 301 and Span 304. An areas which I developed was my ability to communicate more fluidly in Spanish. I am now able to communicate interpersonally (with clients at my job or meeting Spanish speakers in public. I am able to communicate interpretively during class while listening to lectures or while reading assigned works. Though, I struggle understanding every word, what I do understand allows me to comprehend Spanish in both spoken and written form. I did find it challenging at times to follow the lecture or material. There were times I noticed if I spent too much time interpreting the word I would lose track of the lecture. Other times where I felt challenged were when I couldn't understand the professor for the speed of their lecture. Spanish language is known, at times, to be spoken quickly, which was evident to me in certain classes. Accomplishing this MLO contributed my own personal intellectual growth by expanding my language skills, vocabulary, and my listening skills to name a few. My co-workers all noted how much my Spanish improved in the two-years I studied at CSUMB.
In Span 304, we read literature from all over latin america. In this class, I practiced my reading and interpreting skills. I learned to love poetry specifically during this class. In High School, I took an AP English Literature class which mostly came back to me while taking this class. The differences between authors and the connections between movements was all very intriguing to me. I loved learning more during the poetry section, and I really loved the challenge of understanding the meanings of the poems. I found myself re-reading practically everything in this class to just comprehend it appropriately. Oftentimes, I found an unfamiliar word and looked it up to better understand the poem overall.
In Span 301, I had plenty of opportunities to practice my writing and listening skills. Throughout this class we wrote multiples essays and listened to many videos. The essay I am most proud of is the argumentative essay I wrote on the validity of the Holocaust. We decided the topic to write about for this essay, as long as two sides could be argued, which was exciting to me. I chose to write on the validity of the Holocaust because I had visited a Concentration Camp in Germany when I was very young. The atmosphere was so somber, you could feel it while you were visiting. A few years later I heard how antisemitism negated or downplayed the massacre. I really wanted to write a good argument, which was challenging. Due to this class, and the prior writings, I felt confident in the argument I prepared
Below first I have an example of the work I did in Span 304, second I have an example from Span 301.
