Span 303-Advanced Spanish Grammar
Course Description
Reviews all phases of communication skills with practice in understanding, speaking, and writing grammatically correct Spanish. Teaches specific components of Spanish grammar: the Spanish verbal system, the subjunctive, ser versus estar, and other problematic aspects of grammar. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative
In this course, I learned the proper grammar in relation to speaking and writing Spanish. This class was specifically important to me as I was still in the process of learning the language. In this class, I learned each tense on a deeper level from what was taught to me in introductory Spanish classes. One tense which I always had difficulties with was the Imperfect tense. Before completing this class, I would use the imperfect in times when I need the preterite or vice versa. I was finally able to solidify my understanding of using the imperfect in past actions that DID NOT have an exact start or ending. For example, "Estaba visitando mi familia en Panamá cuando..." ("I was visiting my family in Panama when...") describes an event that happened to me at an unspecified time. Another problematic in my Spanish grammar was the difference between "Por" and "Para". Again, I oftentimes misused "Por" and "Para" when practicing Spanish. Both words translate to for in English, but the context of the sentence changes which word is needed. In this class, we studied the circumstances to which we use either. In general, "Por" is used for travel, communication, exchanges, duration, and motivation opposed to "Para" which is used for destination, recipients, deadlines and goals. This class was very helpful on my journey of Spanish Language Acquisition, and also met Major Learning Outcome 1, language proficiency.
Below is an example of the homework we did covering the topic of words which had the same meaning but were used in different contexts.
