SPAN 330 - Hispanic Testimonials
Couse Description
A course on individual and collective memoirs, diaries, confessions and traveling accounts. Students read and analyze written texts and films, keep journals, and create life writing or multimedia production in Spanish. Taught in Spanish.
Course Narrative
In this class we heard testimonies from multiple Latin American Countries. In the novel La Escuelita we learned about Alicia Portnoy, who was imprisoned in a detention center in Argentina for three and a half months for being an activist. What stood out to me most in this novel was her vivid descriptions even though she was blindfolded by the guards. For example, she recalls the plastic flower which was on the sandal given to her. One other testimony we saw was from Mexico, where two school buses full of students disappeared and have yet to be recovered. These students were all around my age, which put the differences in our lives into perspective. For a final project, two of my classmates and I interviewed a women from Mexico who had struggle a lot throughout her life. Hearing her testimony was so moving, as she had gone through such horrible things. Despite all of the awful things that happened to her she continued to make her life better. She got help where she needed it and pursued an education. I learned from this class to be thankful for the life I have but to also strive for better wherever I can. This class taught me gratitude in so many different aspects of my life. This class was the most emotional class I took at CSUMB. While each class was important to my language acquisition this class in particular opened my eyes and my heart to the countries of Latin America.
Below is the testimony of a woman that my two classmates and I recorded for our final project.
