SPAN 309: Hist & Polit Of Latin America
Course Description
Surveys Latin American history focusing on the development of political and social structures since the independence movements of the 19th century. Emphasizes Latin phenomenon as caudillismo, indigenismo, the Church and liberation theology, and the revolutionary movements in the 20th century.
Course Narrative
In Spanish 309 we learned about the History and Politics of Latin American countries. We learned about the political, economic and social structure of each country starting in the 19th century. In addition, we related these topics to Capitalism, Colonialism, Imperialism and Economic Neo-Liberalism, Neocolonialism, Nationalism, Indigenismo, Inter-culturality, Racism, Gender and Gender Identity, Social Inequality, Dependency, Underdevelopment, Militarism, Populism, Revolution, Socialism, Liberation Theology, Free Trade, Fair Trade, Democratization, U.S. Hegemony, Social Justice, Human Security, Human Rights, and Regional Experience.
We did the above through weekly readings from Profesor Richard Harris's book "Capital, Power and Inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean, and Death of a Revolutionary: Che Guevara's Last Mission" online discussion forums, one midterm paper, and a final paper. We also researched the history of a specific Latin American country and wrote a paper on our findings. I personally researched Panama for this assignment. Within this research I learned more about Panama's independence and regrowth after each political revolution. I saw this from a Global perspective. One of the topics I found most interesting was how Spain colonized many of the Latin American countries then how those countries eventually found for independence. I also found the differences and similarities in each country to be fascinating. The year prior to this class, I took a trip to Perú, where I saw Sacsayhumán and Machu Picchu. It was incredible to learn how they were able to build places of such greatness. In Span 309, I learned more about the capabilities of early civilization in Latin America. This class met with MLO 3 of Literary and Cultural Knowledge.
