VPA 313 Regional Art History
Course Description
VPA 313 engages students in inquiry based learning as they investigate, analyze and describe, both in written and oral presentation format, the overlays of multiple cultures evidenced in early Central Coast art, 1875-1950. Based on the concept of cultural citizenship, the course examines both groups and individuals. While the content focus will be on the visual arts, the course will also examine literature and poetry as they serve to expand and enrich an understanding of regional expression.
Course Narrative
In this class we learned about a variety of artists who depicted the Central Coast of Monterrey, CA. In this class, we visited art museums local to Monterrey Bay. There we saw many artists' work who were inspired by the surrounding area. We also watched documentaries about Monterey Bay in it's younger years. One documentary was actually on John Steinbeck, who is my favorite writer, and one of the main reasons I chose to go to school at CSUMB. My main outtake from this class was the mixture of cultures throughout the Central Coast. I personally researched Pedro de Lemos and his work and wrote a comparison piece for the final paper. I examined the following pieces "The Harp of the Winds", "The Cliff Dweller", "The Golden Hour" ,"The Path to the Sea" and "Sleepy Heads". My paper discussed the similarities and differences between each work mentioned. The first four were all similar, depicted a moving picture of trees swaying in the wind. Each with a portion of the ocean in the background, within the ocean waves were drawn to further illustrate movement. Then, the last piece, was a depiction of the stillness of night. A combination of showing birds asleep, leaves which were still, and a deep rich blue color which represented the night all conveyed the serenity of the piece of art. De Lemos found inspiration in the Monterey Bay and it is evident in his work. Overall, this class helped me in analyzing art, which proved to be useful. In my Capstone, one of the poems I analyzed was actually an authors literary representation of a famous piece of art, "Prometheus". With my prior knowledge of art from this class, I was able to interpret the poem in relation to the actual art piece.
My final paper is included below.
