MLO 4 Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Cultures
MLO 4 Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Cultures:
4.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of Hispanic cultures with a second culture other than those.
4.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Hispanic cultures.
To satisfy the MLO 4 of Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Culture I took HCOM 346 African American Life and History. In this class I learned the History of African Americans in great detail. We began our studies with the kidnapping and transportation of African Americans to the United States for the reason of being used as slaves. We read many stories and watched many documentaries on the unfair treatment of African Americans. An example of a work I read is the biography of Malcom X. One section of his book really stood out to me, the section which stated the equality in intellect between white and black men. Though Malcom X was extremely intellectual he knew they would never recognize his intellect for what it was since he was a person of color. Another interesting topic of this book was how his parents even favored a certain child for the color of their skin based on subconscious social influence. Malcom X was the lightest of all of his siblings. His father favored and treated him better because of his fairness in comparison to the others. This was because his father was conditioned to associate white or fairness with better. Then his mother least favored him because of how light he was. His mother was the result of a sexual violation by a white man. The lightness of her own skin always reminded her of the horrible event that happened to her mother. Therefore, when she had a child with light skin, like her, it further reminded her of the violation. This concept was very interesting to me. I never thought about the role a racist society played on those who were actually being persecuted. Something else that showed the racism in the United States during this time was when Malcom told his teacher he wanted to be a lawyer. His teacher told him basically to set his goals to be more realistic, even though Malcom was one of the top students in his class. Based on his skin color however, he wasn't destined to have a career as great as that of being a lawyer. Overall, this class really opened my eyes to the racism African Americans faced and still face. While I learned about slavery and the unfair treatment of African Americans before, this class provided more detail which changed my mindset even more. I think this class is very important for all students to learn because oftentimes it was not fun, and was actually very sad and hard. It is important for us to all understand the gravity of the past and current situations to prevent more inequality. This class met the MLO 4 of Secondary Culture Other than Hispanic Culture.
Below I have my response to the assigned reading of Malcom X's biography. This book was very influential in my opinions after taking the class.
