Span 301s
SPAN 301S-Service Learning in the Chicano / Latino Community
This course is part of your Spanish language learning experience, and offers you the opportunity to interact in a personal way with members of the local Latino community, thereby enriching your understanding of Hispanic cultures and the Spanish language. As a community-based learning experience, the course provides students with career-related experience working collaboratively with community agencies to address community concerns / issues. Taught in Spanish.
I chose to do my service learning at The Village Project located in Seaside. My responsibilities there included; tutoring the children in subject matter, creating educational activities for free time and working specifically with the children who were attending the local dual-immersion school. As one of the two Spanish speaking tutors, I dedicated more time to the children who spoke Spanish. My ultimate goal, was to help the children enjoy learning by easing any frustration they may held towards school. I felt compassion for the children who struggled with their schoolwork as I was once in their shoes and still remember the frustration I experienced. I felt social responsibility towards the children who struggles. As a child, I was fortunate enough to have tutors who helps me through school. My parents financially provided that for me, as they were in a situation which allowed it. Many kids, however, do not have access to that specific resource. I felt it was my social responsibility to help the children academically and emotionally. I felt it was just for me to extend my time to children who needed it. Many kids aren't fortunate enough to have caring adults in their lives. I strived to be a positive and caring adult figure to inspire them. I added to the diversity of their social surroundings as I was a young Latina pursuing a Bachelors Degree. I showed them, that regardless of our race, we can all pursue what our hearts desired.
This Service Learning experience enhanced my language skills as I spoke Spanish with more frequency. My experience also enhanced my language skills as I saw Elementary School material in Spanish for the first time. As the students all cam from unique cultures, I learned about the differences between them. I also taught them about my own culture, as the daughter of a Panamanian woman.
