MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge
MLO 3 Literary and Cultural Knowledge:
Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions), and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) — of Hispanic societies.
I met MLO 3 of Literary and Cultural Knowledge with the following classes, Span 304, Span 309 and Span 322. In all of these classes we discussed the history of Latin America and Spain, the societies and beliefs.
In Span 304 we specifically learned about the literary movements, the influences and the impact on Latin America. In this class we learned that Modernism was the first movement with origins in a Latin America. Rubén Darío born in Nicaragua, pioneered the movement. He pulled inspiration from three other movements with French influence, the movements were Symbolism, Parnassianism and Romanticism. One feature of the Modernist movement which was most intriguing to me was the reference to classic culture, specifically the references made to Greek Mythology. Darío used figures who either exemplified a characteristic, was a member of royalty or was a god. He specifically used these figures to highlight and compare to the prestige of the Modernist movement. I really enjoyed this class, and I ended up realizing the love I have for poetry.
In Span 309 we learned about the history of Latin America. We started this class with the Mayans their rituals and traditions. We learned about the Panamá Canal and the involvement of the United States. We also learned about the other involvements by the United States with Latin American countries. Three subjects who stood out in my head were Micaela Batidas, Che Guevara and Simón Bolívar. I thought the role Micaela Bastidas played in the commitment of Spanish colonialism was inspiring.
In Span 322, we again learned about the literary movements and important authors out of Latin America. This class was focused more on the works instead of the History like we did in Span 304. For this class I read the novel "Pedro Paramo" by Juan Rulfo. The novel was very interesting to me because of the point of view
Below is an assignment I did in Span 304 which was writing a Calaverita. I used the knowledge I learned from Span 309 to create a poem with rhythm and flow. I then recited it in front of a small crowd at the CSUMB Center in Salinas.
Next, is an assignment I did in Span 309. The assignment was actually the Mid term, which asked questions in regards to gender roles, social revolutions, classifications of countries, the Casta System, reasons for poverty, consequences of colonization, and the "Lost Decade".
